Yes! Issa Rae To Voice Spider-Woman in “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2!”

Insecure star and creator, “The Awkward Black Girl,” herself, Issa Rae is set to voice Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman in the sequel to Sony’s critically acclaimed animated film, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse!”

Issa Rae joins Shameik Moore (Dope, Netflix’s The Get Down) and Hailee Steinfield as they reprise their roles of Spider-Man (Miles Morales) and Spider-Gwen, respectively. There is very little besides her casting being revealed concerning the actress/content creator’s role other than which character she is voicing, but it marks the first time the character will debut in an animated film, and Issa’s first voice over. It is reported, however, the sequel film will have other Spider-Man related characters from across Marvel’s multiverse making an appearance.

Unlike many of the other Spider-Man related characters who gained theirs through a radioactive spider bite, Jessica’s were the result of her father, a brilliant geneticist, injecting her with arachnid blood to halt uranium poisoning in her cells. She was placed in stasis and over many decades she slowly healed, gaining her powers in the process.

Jessica Drew is just one of many women and super-heroines with the code name of Spider-Woman. However unlike most of these other heroes she can fly, is immune to poisons and toxins, manipulates her pheromones to make men fall in love with her and repulse women; fires bolts of bio-electricity that can shatter steel, and additionally possesses most of the basic spider powers attributed to Spider-Man (minus the webbing).  Jessica’s mother is also a super villain and terrorist known as Viper who has clashed with superheroes like Captain America, Wolverine, The Winter Soldier, and even some teams of Avengers. Jessica herself is also an Avenger, S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and member of a HYDRA–a terrorist organization–making her a “triple agent.”

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse 2 is set to premiere in theaters everywhere October 7, 2022.

The series is created by writer/executive producer Karin Gist (Star, Mixed-ish) and executive producer Lee Daniels (Empire, Star); drawing inspiration Lawrence Otis Graham’s thrilling novel, Our Kind Of People: Inside America’s Black Upper Class. The drama is set in Martha’s Vineyard where for over fifty years elite African-Americans have held power. The story follows a single mother, Angela Vaughn (DaCosta) as she attempts to reclaim her family’s name while making a revolutionary impact with her burgeoning haircare line for Black Women. She soon finds nothing is as easy as it seems, and her mother holds a secret that threatens everything she holds dear.

Letoya plays Leah Franklin-Dupont, a powerful, elegant, and sophisticated businesswoman, who alongside her husband Raymond (Chestnut), seemingly rule over the well established Black elite community in Martha’s Vineyard. Leah in her own sanctimonious way feels compelled by her statue, that it is her responsibility to give back to the Black community. However, Angela’s arrival threatens her family’s legacy, Leah dedicates herself to barring her from acceptance in the community and threatening everything she holds dear.

As you may recall, Letoya is no stranger to playing the villain in a series. She portrayed “Rochelle James” for three seasons on OWN’s Greenleaf,  as she attempted to destroy the lives and marriage of James and Mae Greenleaf in revenge for her father’s death. She is also currently in production on Lifetime’s Line Sisters.

Our Kind of People is set to air this Fall on Fox’s 2021-2022 line up, rumored to take on the Wednesday night airtime of 9/8 EST/CT Empire originally held. The series marks the first time in television history a scripted show on mainstream television has focused on Martha’s Vineyard’s affluent Black community, marking Fox’s continued commitment to diverse programming in its network and the large Black audience that has made some of the network’s series iconic like Martin, Living Single, New York Undercover, and as aforementioned, Empire.

Yikes! “Too Campy!” The CW Opts To “Rework” Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series’ Pilot!

The CW has opted to rework the pilot for  “The Power Puff Girls” live-action reboot after the network’s executives described it as being “too campy.”

“Sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss,” CW Chairman & CEO Mark Pedowitz told TVLine on Tuesday. “We believe in the cast completely, we believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers, and we believe in the auspices of [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros.] Studios.”

“In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see enough elements in there, we’re going to give it another shot. We didn’t want to go forward with what we had,” he added.

Pedowitz said that part of the reason why the pilot didn’t work was because “tonally, it might have felt a little too campy.”

“It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have. But again, you learn things when you test things out,” he continued. “And in this case, we felt like, ‘Let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.’ This is a powerful property, it has engaged a lot of interest, and we want to get it right before we put it out.”

On Monday, Entertainment Weekly reported that the live-action series, titled Powerpuff, did not receive a series order at this time. Instead, the project is “being reworked and repiloted off-cycle,” according to the outlet.

“Powerpuff Girls'” needing to be reworked does not come as a surprise to us. The series, tonally, was set for young children in its heyday on Cartoon Network. Trying to translate that to a now mature audience, and make it more realistic is quite the undertaking. The series stars Donald Faison as “Professor Utonium” and Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, and Yana Perrault; as Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup, respectively.

“Powerpuff Girls” marks yet another superhero series The CW has passed on alongside Green Arrow and The Canaries, Painkiller, and a Wonder Woman series based off Yara Flores, the Hispanic Wonder Woman of the future. We hope they figure out the series they want. This series can work if done correctly.

CDC States Fully Vaccinated People Can Skip COVID-19 Testing

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC ) has yet again updated its policies in relation to COVID-19. The agency is now reporting people who have been fully vaccinated can skip future COVID-19 testing.

via NYDN

cdc fully vaccinated can skip covid testing

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last week that most people who have received the full course of shots and have no COVID-19 symptoms don’t need to be screened for the virus, even if exposed to someone infected.

The change represents a new phase in the epidemic after nearly a year in which testing was the primary weapon against the virus. Vaccines are now central to the response and have driven down hospitalizations and deaths dramatically.

Experts say the CDC guidance reflects a new reality in which nearly half of Americans have received at least one shot and close to 40% are fully vaccinated.

“At this point we really should be asking ourselves whether the benefits of testing outweigh the costs — which are lots of disruptions, lots of confusion and very little clinical or public health benefit,” said Dr. A. David Paltiel of Yale’s School of Public Health, who championed widespread testing at colleges last year.

While vaccinated people can still catch the virus, they face little risk of serious illness from it. And positive test results can lead to what many experts now say are unnecessary worry and interruptions at work, home and school, such as quarantines and shutdowns.

Other health specialists say the CDC’s abrupt changes on the need for masks and testing have sent the message that COVID-19 is no longer a major threat, even as the U.S. reports daily case counts of nearly 30,000.

“The average Joe Public is interpreting what the CDC is saying as ‘This is done. It’s over,’” said Dr. Michael Mina of Harvard University, a leading advocate of widespread, rapid testing.

With more than 60% of Americans not fully vaccinated, he thinks screening of those without symptoms still has a role, particularly among front-line workers who have to deal with the public.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said the updated guidelines are based on studies showing the robust effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing disease in various age groups and settings. Even when vaccinated people do contract COVID-19, their infections tend to be milder, shorter and less likely to spread to others.

As a result, the CDC says vaccinated people can generally be excluded from routine workplace screening for COVID-19.

That change could eliminate testing headaches like the one recently reported by the New York Yankees, when one player and several staffers tested positive on a highly sensitive COVID-19 test, despite being vaccinated.

Baseball officials are discussing whether to drop or reduce testing of people who have no symptoms.

But widespread attempts to waive testing for vaccinated people could face the same dilemma seen with the CDC’s new guidelines on masks: There’s no easy way to determine who has been vaccinated and who hasn’t.

Employers can legally require vaccinations for most workers, though few have tested that power, since the vaccines don’t yet have full regulatory approval. Even asking employees to disclose their vaccination status is viewed as intrusive by many employment-law specialists.

For now, testing appears to be continuing unchanged in places that adopted the practice, from offices to meatpacking plants to sports teams.

Pork producer Smithfield Foods said it continues to conduct a combination of mandatory and optional testing for employees, depending on conditions at work sites. Amazon said it will still offer regular, voluntary testing.

The NBA has indicated it plans to keep its testing system in place for now. The league has been praised for using rigorous testing to create COVID-19-free “bubbles” around players, coaches and staff.

On a national level, the supply of COVID-19 tests now vastly surpasses demand. U.S. officials receive reports of about 1 million tests per day, down from a peak of over 2 million in mid-January, though many rapid tests done at home and workplaces go uncounted.

Consumers can buy 15-minute, over-the-counter tests at pharmacies and other stores. That’s on top of increased capacity from U.S. laboratories and hospitals, which ramped up testing after last year’s crushing demand.

The U.S. will be capable of conducting 500 million monthly tests in June, according to researchers at Arizona State University.

As recently as this winter, many health experts were calling for a huge testing effort to safely reopen schools, offices and other businesses. But that was before it was known how effective the vaccine would be in the real world, how quickly it could be distributed and whether it would protect against variants.

“The vaccines overperformed, which is the best news possible,” said Dr. Jeffrey Engel of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists. “So now you can begin to peel back some of these other layers of mitigation like mask use and screening.”

We are now over a year into dealing  with COVID-19 and its restrictions. It is good to see the world reopening. However, we encourage everyone to get vaccinated and use their own discretion while interacting with others.

Yes! City Councilman Antonio Brown announces run for Atlanta Mayor

Atlanta City Councilman, Antonio Brown, entered the mayoral race today, announcing his intent at noon on the steps of City Hall surrounded by his family, friends, influencers, supporters and staff.

The District 3 councilman, is known for his activism in social justice, speaking out for the marginalized and poor communities, advocating for the rights, safety, and inclusion of the LBTQ+ community seeks to “Reimagine Atlanta!”

Antonio endured quite a rocky upbringing. Both of his parents were incarcerated during his childhood, he grew up impoverished and dropped out of high school at fifteen to bag groceries and help support his younger siblings. Over the years he not only improved on his own life but fought for a better way of life for people all over the city. In his announcement speech, Brown outlines this reimagining of Atlanta by transitioning the political power away from Atlanta’s elite and placing it back into the hands of it citizens. “People are no longer asking for a seat at the table. They realized that they are the table, and elected officials are just invited guests to that table!” He further outlined the reimagining by speaking on affordable housing, more jobs, a better educational system, and an improved public transportation system, and second chances for people who have paid their debt to society.

Antonio lightly touched on the indictments of fraud and false bank statements from 2020 stating outright they are false and that he would not be running for mayor if there were any validity to them. He went on to make a profound statement about the type of politicians people everywhere need. “…the time for perfect politicians is done, people want politicians that are real and are working for them.”

Antonio’s announcement comes on the heels of current Mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms’ announcement she would not seek re-election. Brown has voiced his love and support the mayor publicly and via social media tweeting, “Always hold tight to your faith, God makes no mistakes. Thank you for your service to our city Mayor @KeishaBottoms [praying hands].” If Brown is he elected he will become the 61st, and youngest mayor at the age of 36, for Atlanta. “Young people are leading the way, just look around at all the young activists and people here. Antonio is a part of a generation of people unafraid to take on big politics and fat cats. He knows who he is and the people he is fighting for. It’s refreshing! It’s a good time be an ATLien!” states Ernesto Allen.

To support Antonio Brown’s campaign follow him on social media via Instagram @antonioforatl, on Twitter @AntonioIsMuted,  and donate to his campaign by visiting his website at www.ReimaginingAtlanta.com.
